What Are Boundaries?

It is likely that you are already familiar with boundaries in your life, although, you may refer to them as something else. Rules, laws, rituals, guidelines, limits, and goals are all different ways to describe boundaries. But what are they exactly? Boundaries are the limits you place with yourself and with others in relation to your core values. Setting boundaries is how you show respect to your body, mind, and spirit and how you show respect within your relationships, as well.

Why are boundaries important? Boundaries are important because they enable you to have healthy, thriving relationships with yourself and with others. They set the standard on how you are to be treated and allow you to live in alignment with your values. Every aspect of your life is impacted by boundaries including all relationships, your time, personal space, energy, thoughts/emotions, and material belongings. If you are feeling anger, resentment, overwhelmed, or avoidance in any area of your life, then you may need to think about using stronger boundaries.

How do you begin? Working with a counselor can ease the complicated process of setting boundaries. A counselor can guide you through self-exploration, help you to identify what is most important in your life, and support you as you learn how to implement necessary changes. Defining your values and setting boundaries is a unique and powerful process. This process can be challenging, but ultimately will deliver life changing results.
