Are you Flourishing?

Most people are able to visit a medical doctor when their bodies tell them that something is not quite right or has unexplained pain, but what if one’s mind is trying to communicate that something feels wrong?  Can you find the words?  Do you feel ‘uncomfortable’ or ‘not right’ and wonder if there is a problem?  You might ask ‘am I stuck?’

The World Health Organization defined ‘Wellness’ 70 years ago as “a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Another way to consider your wellness is to ask ‘Am I Flourishing?’ A good place to start is to take a snapshot of your life – consider where you are right now and determine what is important to you. Doodle your very own ‘Self Assessment.’

It does not need to be complicated – just jot down your thoughts under the following headings:

  • Values
  • Skills
  • Interests/Leisure Activities
  • Needs
  • Motivations
  • Spirituality/Faith
  • Goals and Priorities
  • Health
  • Personal Responsibilities
  • Financial Responsibilities

Lists are not for everyone so I encourage you to make a circle for each area in your life and brain storm your thoughts in the centers, or if you are creative, draw a giant flower and write the headings in separate petals. Grab a relaxing hot drink, curl up in your favorite safe place, put on some restful background music and just write.

Then sit back and objectively look at where you believe you are struggling to support yourself.  In busy lives, individuals often overlook themselves in favor of others. This short ‘Me Time’ exercise will give you the opportunity to begin figuring out what you need in your life.
