Choosing to come to counseling for the first time may feel daunting, but you are not alone. People seek help for a variety of reasons. Not feeling 'quite right' can negatively affect employment, relationships and all areas of life. Quality of relationships give meaning to our lives and we are all products of our values and belief systems, experiences and environments. Feeling stuck because something from our past still bothers us or a current event feels overwhelming can impact both mental and physical health. Did you know that depression is not a normal part of the ageing process or that stress, anxiety and lack of sleep can lead to physical illness?
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Nurse, holding a Master's Degree in Counseling from Sam Houston State University. I maintain memberships of the National Board for Certified Counselors, a Professional Honor Society (CSI) and a current license with The Texas Board of Nursing, ensuring I adhere to strict codes of ethics, high professional standards and enabling me to remain clinically up to date to provide you with best practice treatment.
With over twenty years' experience as an RN and personal encounters with cancer and grief, I transitioned from nursing to counseling as there was never enough time available for helping patients feel emotionally supported. I bring an integrative, trauma informed wellness approach to counseling, caring for people holistically. I may use techniques from Cognitive Behavioral and Acceptance and Commitment Therapies (CBT & ACT), employ Mindfulness and I am trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), an evidence-based treatment specifically designed to address symptoms of Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I am committed to building a trusting therapeutic relationship supporting adults, and have a passion to assist older clients or their caregivers. I will work collaboratively with you to address your concerns, set achievable goals, support you to discover your inner strengths and help you understand your own sense of purpose and what a life well lived means for you.
I have been married for 37 years to my high school sweetheart and we have two adult children who are currently serving in the US Military. When not engaged in Counseling I enjoy dancing, hiking/walking, yoga, theater productions, jigsaw puzzles, playing board games, home cooked suppers with friends, watching bird antics through the window and volunteering at a local hospital.
